  • The term “holistic” started to become part of the path towards wellness in the United States only 30-40 years ago, but today, holistic medicine has become a legitimate option for those seeking a comprehensive system of healthcare that considers every aspect of their lives.  Holistic and wellness programs are focused on achieving whole-body health through nutrition, exercise, meditation and preventive care.
  • Advocates of the holistic health philosophy typically seek or use a wide variety of alternative practices, the most common of which include dietary changes, massage, herbal supplements, acupuncture, ayurveda, Tai Chi, chiropractic, aromatherapy, detox, hypnosis, and yoga.

Health and Wellness Program Philosophy

  • I believe that whatever happens in your life, you can always bring yourself in balance.  One of the main texts of Ayurveda (the ancient Indian healing system, which translates as “science of life” in Sanscrit and was developed at least 3,000 years ago) offers 10 pairs of opposites as a key to restore balance.

  • The yogi sages who developed Ayurveda created these principles discovering that qualities of matter exist in pairs of opposites and that opposing qualities balance each other, for instance, adding heat to something warm increases the warmth, or adding heat to something cold results in something warmer, or less cold. Does it sound simple? Yes, it does. But even if you realize that to restore the balance you should apply the opposing qualities, it is still easier to say than to do – live in balance.
  • Everything is about balance so far, isn’t it?  Let’s take another example. Are you familiar with Yin-Yang theory? It is based on Chinese philosophy. It is a carefully designed system of opposites, used to describe and simplify all phenomena, including food and lifestyle. The original meaning of Yin-Yang was the bright side-dark side. Yang is the bright side and Yin is the dark side.

  • As you can see, the basic properties of darkness, coldness, stillness belong to Yin.  The basic properties of heat, brightness, activeness belong to Yang. Yin and Yang oppose each other and at the same time have an interdependent relationship. Without Yang there is no Yin, without Yin there is no Yang.  When the body is in balance between Yin and Yang health is predominant. When the Yin and Yang are imbalanced, disease occurs. Simple?  Not exactly, but we can see the same message: balance, balance and balance. As Catherine Pulsifer said once: “At times, it is difficult to keep a proper balance in our lives.  But, over time, an improper balance will lead to problems.”
